Mt. Kotoishi / Mitsuga-dake Peak

Mt. Kotoishi is the second highest mountain of Yanai City. Many school songs celebrate it all around the city, and so, Yanai citizens are very familiar with the name of this mountain. All the peaks are linked together to form Mitsuga-dake Peak that leads to the main trekking route, which is popular among hikers and trekkers. When the weather is sunny and clear, you can see all the way to Shikoku Island and Kyushu. Wild cherry trees and camellia Japonica naturally grow all around the mountainous area. In the flowering season, you can admire beautiful seasonal flowers and blossoms in full bloom.

There are two yamazakura (wild cherry) trees midway through the hiking trail on Mt. Kotoishiyama. These are among only a few giant-sized trees within Yamaguchi Prefecture, and are beloved by visitors to Atagosha Shrine as well as other climbers of Mt. Kotoishiyama, and the local people.
Both trees have a branch spread of around 10 meters in circumference, and can be seen from as far away as Yanai Port when in full blossom.
